WASHINGTON INVITATIONAL: Bloomington South took fifth at Country Oaks with a 322. No. 5 Castle won with a 302 followed by No. 10 Evansville North 312, Jasper 314 and Floyd Central 320. South: Carson Gady 77, Colton Watson 78, Owen Wisley 78, Owen Gerber 89, Aidan Bomba WD.

CENTER GROVE TROJAN CLASSIC: No. 9 Center Grove won on its home course of Hickory Stick with a 291 and it's B Team was third at 298 with No. 2 Guerin Catholic second at 292. Bloomington South's B Team was 12th at 326 and Bloomington North was 15th at 328. South: Easton Bellini 78, Russel Israelsen 79, Kam Feagans 80, Asher Joseph 89, Aeneas Scheutz 90. North: Rex Speer 78, Alec Freund 81, Zayan Farzad 84, Hogan Conder 85, Foster Larsen 102.

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 4, JEFFERSONVILLE 0: Connor Couch (two-hitter, five strikeouts) out-dueled Carter Williams (three-hitter) in a pitcher's battle that was a 1-0 game before the Panthers (2-5) struck for three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jake McCammon, Drew Palileo and Luke Arnett drioe in the three runs for South.

HOMESTEAD 4, EDGEWOOD 0: The Mustangs (2-3) had no giddy-up in Kokomo against Central Michigan signee Luke Neiswonger and Class 4A No. 8 Homestead (8-1). Neiswonger went five innings, striking out 14. In all Edgewood fanned 18 times with all 12 who batted going down at least once. Anthony Shields went six innings in the loss.

FRANKLIN CENTRAL FLASHES MILE SHOWCASE: There were 27 runners and one relay team from Bloomington North, South, Edgewood and Eastern Greene competing.

In the fifth and fastest girls heat, South's Ellie Barada got the best of two Carmel runners again (who were top 12 at state cross country last fall) by just over three seconds in 4:54.16. South's Lexi Kollbaum was fourth in 4:58.95 while Aurelia Martoglio was 14th (5:12.11) and Jasmine Martoglio was 15th (5:13.49). In Heat 4 (Winning time 5:08.94): 3. Mary Asplund, South 5:14.12; 8. Hannah Crain, Edgewood 5:18.36; 13. Lilyanna Blais, Eastern Greene 5:22.78.

The top boys race won by Westview's Noah Bontrager (state cross country runner up) with a meet record 4:07.73, topping the 4:08.94 run by Martinsville's Martin Barco in 2023. North's Jacob Mitchell (state indoor 3,200 champ) was third in 4:15.64 and the second Indiana runner to finish. North's Caelan D'Onofrio was 11th (4:22.21) and Caleb Winders 13th (4:23.56).

CASCADE 5, EDGEWOOD 2: Last year's 2A state champs look like sectional favorites once again after topping the Mustangs as Lacie Godby (5K, 0BB) out dueled Ally Bland (8K, 2BB) with both tossing seven-hitters. Cadets (5-3) scored two runs each in the bottom of the third and fourth to pull ahead. Bland was 2-for-4.

MARTINSVILLE 13, BLOOMINGTON NORTH 7: Busy day with 37 combined hits but 17 were not enough for the Cougars (4-3) as Martinsville scored in every inning. Arties led 6-4 after four before pulling away. Jocelyn Parrish and Kendyl Feutz were each 4-for-4 with two RBI for North while Kinsley Stanley was 3-for-4, Kaydence Silvers was 3-for-5 and Keylee Taylor was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Mylee Jarrett was 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBI for Martinsville.

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 6, TERRE HAUTE NORTH 1: Brilee McGlothlin picked up her second win of the season with a five hitter. Sloane Barrett (2-for-4) drove in three runs for the Panthers (4-1, 2-0 CI), who broke it open with a five-run fourth, while Akasha Burton had a homer and Larkyn Ivey scored twice. EDGEWOOD 7, INDIAN CREEK 6: Reliever Jackson Huber came on to put an end to a hectic seventh inning to preserve the comeback win for the Mustangs (2-1, 1-0). Edgewood scored two runs in the top of the seventh only to see the Braves score three before Huber shut the door. Nolan Hudson got the win. Sam Lawson was 3-for-4 while Hudson, Will Lawson, Will Inman and Gunnar Perry each had two hits and Carter Hayden had two RBI.

OWEN VALLEY 15, BROWN COUNTY 5 (5 inn): Owen Valley (4-1, 2-0) drew 14 walks to go with nine hits and used a seven-run third inning to break it open. BC (0-4, 0-2) made the most of two hits with six walks, scoring in each of the first four innings.

EASTERN GREENE 13, MITCHELL 4 (6 inn): The runs keep on coming for the T-Birds (4-1) who had a six-run bottom of the fourth inning and ended it early with a five-run sixth. Chaz Perry got the win with five strong innings and 10 strikeouts. Eastern had 14 hits and 12 stolen bases while Mitchell committed five errors. Brenton Cook was 3-for-5 with three RBI and Kasen Cullison drove in two without getting a hit. Trevor Stogsdill was 3-for-4 and Gavin Whitfield stole home.

Softball

OWEN VALLEY 8, BROWN COUNTY 2: Haley Amador tossed a three-hitter in the WIC win and also went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI. Kalyn Greene was 3-for-4 with a homer and three runs scored. Makynlee Bonds had two hits and two RBI and Abree Wells drove in two.

Tuesday, April 15

Baseball

BLOOMINGTON NORTH 7, TERRE HAUTE SOUTH 1: Luke Freel went six strong innings, giving up six hits, one run, walking one and striking out six for the Cougars (5-1, 2-0 CI). North led 6-0 after three innings. Liam Smith had two hits and Chris Barnett, Jake Meyer and Drew Wagner each had two RBIs.

OWEN VALLEY 8, SOUTH PUTNAM 2: A six-run fifth broke open a 2-2 tie ballgame for the Patriots (3-1, 1-0), who limited the Eagles to three hits.

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 14, SOUTHPORT 1 (5 inn): Panthers (3-1, 1-0) roll in conference opener combining 12 hits with 11 Cardinal errors. Abby Purtlebaugh was 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs; Bella Simmons was 3-for-4; Taylor Crohn and Rachel Johnson (who tossed a one-hitter) each had two hits and two RBIs; Larkyn Ivey was 2-for-4 and Sloane Barrett stole three bases and scored three times. EASTERN GREENE 14, NORTH KNOX 4 (5 inn): The T-Birds (2-3) erased a 3-0 deficit with a pair of seven-run innings in the third and fourth. Charley Paurazas was 3-for-4 with four RBIs as Eastern had 11 hits. Grace Deckard and Ashlynn Bellman each had two hits and two RBIs, Chyann Padgett had two hits and Gracyn Collier had two RBI.

Girls tennis

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 5, BEDFORD NORTH LAWRENCE 0: Panthers (3-0) gain another sweep. Wins came from Carla Demeter (6-2, 6-2), Hannah Vendeventer (6-0, 6-1) and Clara Tweedle (6-0, 6-0) at singles and Every Clark/Quinn Reynolds (6-1, 6-1) and Mira Koduri/Sydney Gady (6-1, 6-1) at doubles.

EASTERN GREENE INVIATIONAL: Bedford North Lawrence won with 192 points to top Eastern Greene 124½ with Seven Oaks fifth (29) and Lighthouse Christian seventh (8). Top Eastern: 3,200 relay won in 9:01.76; Jade Dawes won the 400 (53.27) and was second in 1,600 (4:59.95); 400 relay was second (47.60); Roman Valentine won pole vault (10-6) and was second in 300 hurdles (43.72); the 1,600 relay won in 3:44.68; Brody Teague was fourth in discus (111-11) and Austin Zink tied for second in high jump (5-4). EASTERN GREENE INVITATIONAL: Bedford North Lawrence won with 168 points to 118 for Orleans and 107 for Eastern Greene. Seven Oaks was fourth (50) and Lighthouse Christian seventh (12). Top Eastern: Clara Hawk won the 100 hurdles (18.32) and was second in the 100 (13.68); Lilyanna Blais won the 1,600 (5:38.35) and the 200 (28.65); Jenna Fillinger was second in 400 (1:08.85); Esther Crane won the 800 (2:35.50) and the 1,600 relay won in 4:35.86. BEDFORD NORTH LAWENCE 3, BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 2 (10 inn): Coming off a 3-2 loss in 10 innings at Silver Creek on Saturday, it happened again. Three South pitchers struck out nine and walked five with Teddy Kroeger taking the loss. Luke Arnett was 2-for-4 and Keagan Palileo had the only RBI. South (1-4) has four losses by a combined five runs.
